Brenham, TX, (March 2, 2010) - REM Surface Engineering, the inventor of the patented Isotropic Superfinish (ISF®) Process, has been chosen as a key technology provider to the U.S. Army's Fuel Efficient Ground Vehicle Demonstrator (FED) program. The FED program will utilize ISF to maximize fuel economy in a Humvee-sized vehicle. REM will be working in conjunction with Ricardo Inc., the vehicle developer.
The FED program was launched by TARDEC, the U.S. Army's Tank Automotive Research, Development and Engineering Center (Warren, Michigan USA) in 2008. The goal of the FED program is to develop and implement technologies that will reduce fuel consumption on the battlefield, thus reducing the military's dependence on oil.
About ISF
ISF is a commercially proven superfinishing technology used in military, aerospace, automotive, off-highway, power generation and alternative energy industries to increase both the efficiency and durability of mechanical systems. Ricardo has specified REM's ISF Process for metal to metal contact components throughout the FED demonstrator vehicle. Example components to be superfinished include gears, bearings, camshafts and crankshafts.
