Southington, CT-REM Surface Engineering completed its first Lean Event 2 weeks ago in their Southington facility. Implementing Lean processes is a large goal for REM in 2010 and beyond because of the value Lean delivers to customers and the unnecessary waste it eliminates. According to Connecticut facility manager, Lori Bailey, "The goal is to adopt a Lean philosophy/culture to make each process as efficient and effective as possible and to connect those processes in a stream of continuous flow and to maximize customer value."
REM's first event focused on the chemical manufacturing side of the business. In one week, the Lean team was able to reduce the time of liquid manufacturing for a specific product by half. Lean team member Sue Bieniek said that the Kaizen was, "A great learning experience... (and) A great pat on the back for accomplishing our goal." According to Lean team member Mike Salerno the event provided a, "New fresh look on how to improve our operations." He continued by adding that implementing Lean will allow a "More efficient way to help serve our customers."
Team Leader Keith Avery commented that, "The REM Team got off to an excellent start on their Lean Journey. The Kaizen Team had a can do attitude and displayed excellent team work and exceeded the original ambitious goals and objectives."
REM looks forward to continuing their Lean initiative in their CT Facility and broadening the initiative throughout all Facilities throughout the end of the year and into 2011.
REM, the inventor of the ISF Process (Isotropic Superfinish), is a global supplier of surface engineering products and services.
