FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

Brenham, TX – REM Surface Engineering, in collaboration with Chalmers University of Technology (Gothenburg, Sweden), is proud to announce the publication of its latest peer-reviewed research paper, “Chemical Mechanical Polishing of Powder Bed Fusion – Laser Beam Processed 316L Stainless Steel,” published in the Journal of Materials Processing Technology (Volume 345, November 2025, Article 119055).

This study highlights REM’s advanced Chemical Mechanical Polishing (CMP) technology applied to PBF-LB/316L stainless steel, a widely used material in additive manufacturing. The research demonstrates the ability of REM’s CMP process to impart significant residual compressive stresses with a uniform penetration depth exceeding 175 microns, findings that underscore both the effectiveness and durability of the process.

Validation of these results was conducted using synchrotron X-ray diffraction at the Deutsches-Elektronen-Synchrotron (DESY) in Hamburg, Germany, further reinforcing the scientific rigor of the work.

“This publication represents years of dedicated effort by Dr. Joshua Boykin and the REM team in developing novel CMP formulations for 316L and advancing post-processing techniques in collaboration with Chalmers University of Technology,” said Dr. Agustin Diaz, Advanced Manufacturing and Innovation Manager at REM Surface Engineering.

Through this partnership with Chalmers University of Technology, REM continues to push the boundaries of additive manufacturing post-processing technologies, contributing to global innovation in materials science and engineering.
