FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE:

Southington, CT – REM Surface Engineering, the pioneer and global leader in isotropic superfinishing, is proud to announce its 60th anniversary. Since its founding in 1965, REM has revolutionized the metal finishing industry with its patented ISF® Technology, transforming how parts are finished for industries ranging from aerospace to automotive to additive manufacturing.

From its humble beginnings in a 2,000-square-foot facility in Southington, Connecticut, REM Surface Engineering has grown into an international powerhouse across North America and Europe. Today, REM is synonymous with high-performance surface finishing, offering innovative solutions that deliver superior results for the world’s most challenging applications.

A Legacy of Innovation

REM’s story began in the 1960s when founders Bob and Florence Michaud responded to a growing need for high-quality metal cleaning solutions in the silverware and hardware industries. Initially operating as REM Chemicals, the company quickly expanded its expertise and services to meet evolving market demands. By the 1980s, REM shifted its focus to vibratory finishing and developed its patented Chemically Accelerated Vibratory Finishing (CAVF) Process, now known globally as the REM® Process.

This groundbreaking innovation set the foundation for REM’s continued growth and success, leading to the development of the ISF® Process in the early 2000s, the Rapid® ISF Process for just-in-time automotive manufacturing in the mid to late 2000s, and the Extreme ISF® Process in the early 2010s, which addresses the unique needs of additive and 3D-printed components.

Global Expansion and Industry Leadership

Over the decades, REM Surface Engineering has expanded its operations across the U.S., and Europe, serving some of the most demanding industries in the world. REM’s client list includes industry leaders in aerospace, automotive, and industrial manufacturing—sectors where surface performance is critical.  From providing cost reduction solutions to the US hand tool industry for over three decades to being a key part of numerous NASCAR® and Formula 1™ championships, to aiding in the success of multiple lunar and Martian rover programs, to being the most used surface polishing process for flight-critical aerospace gearing, to supporting the actualization of next-generation rocket propulsion designs with NASA and commercial space, REM’s breadth of experience is surpassed only by its reputation for success.

A Focus on People and Excellence

At the heart of REM’s success are its employees—dedicated experts with a shared commitment to delivering superior surface finishing solutions. The company’s diverse and talented team continues to push boundaries, innovate, and uphold REM’s reputation for quality and precision.

“As a third-generation, family-owned and operated company, REM approaches our day to day business with a focus on long-term relationships.  Whether that long-term relationship is with our customers, our suppliers, our partners, or our employees, we want to ensure that we provide the highest quality and value while conducting ourselves with integrity.  Our people are our most important asset, and our success is unquestionably linked to the fact that we have so many employees who have been with us for over ten and over twenty years.  The knowledge and the commitment to quality of the “REM Team” is unparalleled in our industry, and we look forward to continuing to build on our decades of success,” Justin Michaud, REM CEO.

Looking to the Future

As REM Surface Engineering celebrates this significant milestone, it also looks to the future. With advancements in additive manufacturing and increasing demand for high-performance surface finishes, REM is well-positioned to lead the next wave of innovation in surface engineering.
