Brenham, Texas – REM Surface Engineering was recognized in the latest release of NASA’s Spinoff 2022 publications for its successful technology and capability developments in support of NASA Marshall Space Flight Center (NASA Spinoff-REM). REM successfully developed the capability to polish, via a robust, machine-controlled process technology, various superalloys under two Small Business Innovation Research (SBIR) contracts with a focus on improving the surface finish of additively manufactured rocket engine components. Via these contracts, REM developed processing solutions to surface finish both laser powder bed fusion (L-PBF) and laser blown powder directed energy deposition (LBP-DED) parts printed from Inconel® 625 and 718, popular nickel-based superalloys of interest to the agency and industry. Additionally, REM developed these same processing capabilities for two novel iron-nickel-based superalloys, JBK-75 and NASA HR-1, of interest to NASA for their specific properties relative to high-pressure hydrogen rocket engines. Coming out of these developments REM was awarded a Phase III SBIR (REM Phase III) with NASA to support the surface finishing of various rocket engine components, a number of which have been successfully hot-fired (RAMPT Project).

REM CEO, Justin Michaud, had this to say about the developments and recognition, “REM is truly honored to be included in this year’s NASA Spinoff highlights. Our work with NASA MSFC has been a fantastic opportunity to broaden our capabilities and technology offerings, and we are grateful to be playing a part in actualizing additive manufacturing as a fabrication technology for rocket engine applications. These SBIR’s are an example of the success that public-private partnerships can play in addressing both government and market needs in the growing metal additive manufacturing surface finishing marketplace.”
